2010

According to my abacus, the year 2010 is less than five months away. Therefore, I think it’s time for us to have a serious discussion to decide the fate of the world. A bit strong? OK, we need to come to a consensus about the proper way to say the upcoming year. The past decade has been relatively easy. We (or least I) always say Oh-8 or Oh-9. What happens next year? Should we say Twenty-Ten; Two Thousand Ten; Oh-Ten; simply 10; or is there another alternative I’m missing?

Discuss.

I'm not even sure we've ever arrived at a consensus about what to call this decade. We had the seventies, the eighties and the nineties, but what about now? I read someone refer to this decade as the oughties or the noughties. I like that one.

I'm a fan of Twenty-ten, although I suspect that we'll all search for an even shorter version. What we CANNOT say is Two-Ten (my old boss used to say it and it drove me mad!)

I am also okay w/ twenty-ten. I can also handle oh-ten.

What is horribly, awfully, wrong tho, is twenty-oh-ten. That would be 20010. And that is not next year.

I'm with tiny350Z, twenty-oh-ten is wrong. And I've heard it. A lot.

oh, come now... everybody knows we don't have to worry about the fate of the world until 2012...

Congrats Sean for being quoted this morning in the express' Blog Log!

Gilahi - Can we go with the zeros?

Neena - Twenty-ten works, but that may be too many syllables. Two-ten doesn't work.

Tiny - 20-oh-ten doesn't make any sense. Thanks for the head's up about today's Blog Log too. I'm famous! Plus, this has to be the first time that the word abacus appeared in the Express.

lacochran - You've really heard people say 20-0-10?

Captain - We'll just say twelve during that year (if we're still here) anyway.

congrats on the express blurb... oh, and the decade currently ending is regularly known as the aughts... at least here in the US...

I like "two ten", short and sweet.
