Name That Tune – Pittsburgh Edition

Welcome to a special edition of name that tune featuring songs with a connection to Pittsburgh. Lyrics from six songs are listed below. Your challenge is to name the song title and artist. This is usually the place where I ask you to try not to search the internet for the answers since you either know the songs or you don’t. In this case, the song title for #3 and artist for #6 may require some internet research. Good luck!

1. "Kathy," I said,
As we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh,
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now.
It took me four days
To hitchhike from Saginaw.

2. New Orleans - New Orleans
Detroit City - Detroit City
Dallas - Dallas
Pittsburgh P. A. - Pittsburgh P. A.
New York City - New York City
Kansas City - Kansas City
Atlanta - Atlanta.
Chicago and L. A.

3. Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there

4. Well pick me up with a golden hand
I may see you, I may tell you to run
You know what they say about the young

5. Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelburg, Colorado, Ellisburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado, Larimore, Adimore, Habastock, Chadanocka, Shasta, Nebraska, Alaska, Opalacka, Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, What A Pity

(Please note that I added the commas)

6. Pittsburgh’s Going to the Super Bowl.

Good luck!

2. Tupac?
3.?
4.?
5.?
6. The guy who sings "here we go"

Nicely done Andy. I never knew the song title, so I thought #3 could have been tough.

Anonymous (if that is your real name), you guessed the artist for #1 (spelling doesn't count) and title for #6 correctly.

Let's keep the guesses coming!

Oh, Tupac is incorrect for #2.

1. - America - S&G
2. - Livin' in America - James Brown
3. - What Andy said
4. - Send me on my Way - Rusted Root
5. - It sounds like that "I've been everywhere" song from the rental car commercial.
6 - I absolutely hate that song since it broke my heart in '94 and '95, and will not type its name..

damn you gobo and your wealth of knowledge. i knew number six and that's it.

What about:

"I went to Pittsburgh/
and joined a pro team/
talk about a bad dream/
I broke a knee"

?

Wow Gobo, that was very impressive. #5 is from the commercial, but it's also a real song by a famous artist. I honestly have no idea who sings #6.

Nick - Is that a real song? It sounds like several draft picks for the Steelers who didn't work out. If it was an arm, instead of a knee, it could be about 10 Pirates pitchers.

#5 is from the commercial -I believe it's "I've Been Everywhere" sung by Johnny Cash.

Sean - yeah, it's a real song! It's from "Radiation Vibe," the first single from the first record by Fountains of Wayne. Much better than "Stacy's Mom"!

How 'bout:
I've been working that Pittsburgh steel, I thought you knowed.
I've been a dumpin' that red-hot slag, way down the road.
I've been a blastin', I've been a firin', I've been a pourin' red-hot iron...

A precursor to all of the other ones on the mighty fine list, perhaps. Didn't Pittsburgh also get a shoutout in Dancing in the Streets?

Anonymous said...

Nope - "Dancin' in the streets" was Philadelphia.

Anonymous said...

How about "No you can't, no you can't, no you can't keep an Iron man down"

Sean said...

Messiah - Is that from Flashdance?

Marc - You're the heart, you're the soul, you're the backbone of this town.

anyone know this?

"Daddy bought a store out in Pittsburgh
And he called his boss and quit
And we tried to convince him
The risk was too much
But he still was convinced
Of his own Midas Touch
So he bought this piece of shit...And then I met this girl named Amy
With a smile as bright as day
And while the Pirates beat the Orioles
We fell in love and danced the night away"

#5 is "I've been everywhere," sung by Johnny Cash.

Trivia: it was originally a song about Australia. Woodenbong indeed!
