I'm Officially Old

The title says it all. You're reading the blog of a brand new member of AARP. Let the discounts begin! I signed up for a 5-year contract which included an insulated trunk organizer where I can place refrigerated or frozen grocery items. My contract runs slightly longer than the one T.J. Watt just signed with the Steelers, and I had to pay $60 instead of receiving $108 million. Otherwise, it's almost exactly the same.

In the last two months, I had two people ask if I plan on retiring soon. The first was my dentist of nearly 25 years though I think this was a set-up for me to ask her the same question. Her youngest child recently graduated from college, and she said that she will probably retire in 2027. While I appreciate the notice, I don't want to look for a new dentist. We have an excellent relationship, and I don't want a new dentist criticizing me for not flossing.

Last month, I saw a former board member of my organization for the first time in nearly 15 years. He also asked about possible retirement. In both conversations, I mentioned that my youngest is about to start 3rd grade, so retiring is still many, many years away. 

Finally, I'm terrible about getting new shoes. I wear my shoes out well beyond their life expectancy. My primary tennis shoes (basically the shoes I wear when not wearing "dress" shoes) have seen better days. I went to two stores, and shared several pictures with my wife to get her opinion. One shoe was completely black, and she replied that old men wear those shoes. 

While I didn't buy them, I think I'm starting to meet that profile and demographic!

Reason #782 Why I'm Old

I like to think that I'm up-to-date on pop culture. Somewhat through my kids, I know most of the current pop hits. When a friend posted on Facebook recently that his son predicted that Dua Lipa would perform at the next Super Bowl halftime show and the friend admitted that he had no idea "who or what is dualipa," I replied by naming several of her biggest songs that he had probably heard. While I don't watch many movies, I'm generally aware of those with the biggest box office numbers. I also follow sports and television rather closely.

Now that I got that out of the way, let's show how unaware I am. My kids watched the NBA All-Star celebrity game the other night. Here are the rosters:

From this list, I know the three country singers, Walker Hayes (he sang the Applebees song), Shaboozey (from Northern Virginia and singer of Tipsy), and Mickey Guyton (can't name any of her songs but she's performed the national anthem at several major sporting events). Matt Barnes and Baron Davis both played in the NBA, and Terrell Owens is a Hall-of-Fame wide receiver. From there, I know that Noah Kahan is a singer, Kai Cenat is a YouTuber my kids like, and I think that Oliver Stark was a character on Game of Thrones. While there were a couple Olympians in this group that I probably watched last summer, I don't know more than half of these celebrities. How many do you know? Or am I just old and out of touch?

Am I Old?

Let me explain before you answer this question. I pride myself on keeping up with popular music. My biggest asset to our trivia team is the ability to name the title and artist of the songs played as clues during trivia night. While I may not be familiar with the indy music scene, I generally at least know the band names. Therefore, I was stunned to see the upcoming concert schedule at DC's 9:30 Club.



The 9:30 Club is pretty well-known music venue with a capacity of about 1,200. While the venue is way too small for the Rolling Stones (or Neil Diamond), many big name bands have played here over the years as an intimate setting for its fans. This is also a good place for up-and-coming bands as well as those that are no longer at its peak. I attended the Collective Soul concert here last year and had a great time.

Anyway, I cannot name one song of any band listed on the schedule. In addition, I've only heard of a handful of these bands. What happened? Did I lose touch with the music scene in the few weeks I've been a father? Or am I just old and don't know music that kids listen to these days?
