Jeremy Renner Attends a Riverhounds Match

Jeremy Renner is an A-list actor. Look at his credits. He got nominated for two Oscars for his terrific work in The Hurt Locker and The Town. Great movies! Throw in some Marvel movies, Arrival, American Hustle, a Bourne film, and more, and you have an incredible career.

Over the last few years, Renner has starred in the Paramount series, Mayor of Kingstown filmed in Pittsburgh. That last part is key since Renner and some of his castmates attended the Pittsburgh Riverhounds match against Detroit City FC on Saturday evening. The Riverhounds won 2-1, becoming the only Pittsburgh professional sports team to win at home on Saturday. Anyway I’m impressed that Renner wore Riverhounds gear at the game, and in honor of this, he gets a blog post dedicated to him!

John Daly Wears A Riverhounds Shirt

I've written various Celebrities in Pittsburgh Gear posts since 2010, and today marks the first time I've ever referenced the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in one of them. On Saturday afternoon, professional golfer John Daly published the following tweet:

On the surface, this appears to be completely random. John Daly has two major championship titles with seemingly no connection to Pittsburgh and particularly the Riverhounds, the city's soccer team in the USL Championship division, a tier below Major League Soccer. However, Daly is apparently friends with Riverhounds owner Tuffy Shallenberger. Doing some internet detective work, I found this Facebook post for Suzy's Simply Delicious in Mount Pleasant, PA with a message thanking the dessert place for the unbelievable cake for the John Daly golf outing and celebrating the birthdays of Tuffy Shallenberger and his son Dylan. 

Tuffy responded to the tweet with a "Love ya, brother" message and a fist bump emoji. Oh, the Riverhounds defeated Hartford Athletic 2-0.

- You can tryout to play for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. I'm saying you since my soccer career peaked when my team won the U-10 championship. Sure, I had some other big moments like playing at the Civic Arena, scoring a goal in my last high school game, and winning a college intramural championship, but I don't think this resume is enough to play professional soccer. I'm also not a fan of paying $125 to participate in an "open tryout." [Pittsburgh Riverhounds]

- On a much lower level of soccer, it appears that the US Soccer Federation is prohibiting and limiting headers for youth players. I have a feeling this is going to be a major topic at my next referee recertification class. [New York Times]
