Trivia Tuesday

Welcome to a brand new Trivia Tuesday! This week I present nine questions that supposedly are not trick questions. As an added bonus, I don't know the answers to most of these questions, so this should be fun.

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables?

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5. In many "alphabet" stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle? This question in no way endorses the purchasing or trying of said beverage.

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters 'dw' and they are all common words. Name two of them.

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them?

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'

As always, please do not use the internet for answers...unless it is to help me confirm whether or not they are correct. The only ones I definitely know are numbers 6 and 8. Good luck!

1. Boxing seems logical, but you still have an idea of who's ahead based on hits landed and whatnot, no? I guess the judges' cards aren't made public during the fight. I'd go with something like sportsfishing. You get to catch your fish during the competition, but you don't weigh it until after the event is over. (This assumes that this is how sportsfishing works).

2. The "constantly" in this question is weird. I'll go with Statue of Liberty.

3. Onions. Something else with a bulb?

7. I don't know about ampersand. I think that's more a typographical symbol than a punctuation mark. Same with brackets. Slash is close. Not sure if it's a legit punctuation thing. That gives us: period, comma, colon, semicolon, hyphen, dash, apostrophe, parentheses, exclamation point, question mark, ellipsis, quotation mark. That's 12. Maybe brackets count, as a designation of text deleted from an original quotation? And then, maybe, an accent mark?

9. Also stilettos! And sanis.

2 is Niagra Falls.

Ooh, stilettos! How could I forget? What are sanis?

Even though I don't know the answers, I'll still give my two cents.

1. Boxing makes sense as I don't think the judges consult with each other with the scorecards. Plus, how many fights have there been where you thought one boxer was the clear winner, but the other boxer ended up winning.

2. Carrie M seems certain that the answer is Niagara Falls. Is that the answer (and if so, why?)?

3. There are some excellent answers there. I have no idea!

4. Nichole & Neena both wrote strawberries, so I'll go with them.

5. Nice job Captain & Neena!

6. Point for Neena & Nichole.

7. I'll go with Messiah on this one.

8. Lettuce; nice job Neena.

9. Very nicely done by all of you.

Why? Because the Discovery Channel told me so. ;-) Seriously though, the rocks "under" the Falls erode at a pretty quick rate. Since a plaque/sign went up marking the falls in like 40s or 50s, it's receded something like 600 feet in just 50 years. Its shape is always changing too due to the erosion - it used to be like horseshoe shaped, and now it's a giant v.

For my next trick, I can also tell you about Mariana's Trench...
