Mario Lemieux Invades Capitals Territory

“Invade” may not be the right word here, but the Mario Lemieux Foundation is building Austin’s Playroom for the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. You’re reading that correctly. The Mario Lemieux Foundation, not the Alexander Ovechkin Foundation, Olaf Kolzig Foundation, or the Rod Langway Foundation, is funding this project, which will support the Wounded Warrior program and provide services to warriors and their families. This new 2,000 square foot playroom will accommodate children from six weeks up to 12 years of age and feature amenities such as a computer kiosk, reading bench and imaginative play area.



I love the fact that the owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins and someone that lives in Pittsburgh after spending his entire childhood in Canada is contributing to a great cause in the Washington DC area. I just can’t see one of the legendary Washington athletes contributing to something in Pittsburgh. Seriously, is there anything in Pittsburgh with the name Sonny Jurgensen, John Riggins, or Wes Unseld associated with it?
