I recently discovered an unopened bag of Rold Gold pretzels in my basement closet. (Yes, this truly is a "Found in My Basement" blog post!) My excitement in finding my favorite snack food was tempered by the fact that the bag shows a use by date of June 2014. While I don't use milk or eggs beyond the expiration date (well, maybe one or two days after the date if the milk smells okay), would an unopened bag of pretzels be stale or unsafe to eat 8 months after the expiration date?
As a veteran expired pretzel eater, I have never had a problem with expired Rold Gold. We buy a ton of it for snack food for volunteers, and I had one this morning that was dated last August. It's not perfect, but certainly more than edible!
ReplyDeleteUpon further review, the expiration date on the pretzels was May, so we're now 9 months late. I've actually been in touch with Frito-Lay about this. I'll post more with an update.
ReplyDeleteUpdate? Lmao
DeleteUpdate? Lmao
DeleteI just had a bag of pretzels dated May 2012 in March 2016. Tastes perfectly fine will keep you updated if my daring moment of indulgence leads to any serious side effects.

ReplyDeleteI am researching this question because my MIL brought us some chocolate covered pretzels that she made and I bit into SEVERAL that tasted moldy, obviously not feeding these to my children but SERIOUSLY, how expired were they!?
ReplyDeleteChocolate is good pretty much forever. And pretzels are a very dry food with sodium directly on them basically meaning that in reality you might just be a completly moronic fool.
ReplyDeleteSalt kills mold and chocolate is safe to eat for decades
ReplyDeleteRoss Rambo is the fool. Ross Rambo knows nothing about the person he insults yet feels free to show his ignorance. Ross Rambo is a stupid ass as evidenced by the silly name Ross Rambo.
ReplyDeleteand Ross Rambo could use a few spelling lessons, e.g. "completEly"
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely not. Perhaps it our area but I swear Rold Gold frito lay uses a preservative that makes them smell horrific at expiration. I just opened a bag dated Jan 9. It’s now may 7. Smells like Turpentine. Paint thinner. Not the first time. This is regular and always rold gold. Doesn’t matter whether it’s sticks or braids. I threw it in the trash. Left for awhile and upon return the whole house smelled like turpentine. To heck with eating these things. You can’t bear the back without being knocked back by the smell. This is about the 4th or 5th tjme over the last decade this has happened
ReplyDeleteI just discovered this for the first time and omg it's awful!! Never experienced that before. They were the mini bags and they were all the same. Smelled absolutely terrible... just like paint thinner!!
DeleteThanks just experienced that didn't realize they went bad, sadly the date is still good
