WTF CNN

Last Wednesday night, I flipped through every news station trying to get information about the horrific events in Mumbai. I finally settled on CNN who seemed to have the most detailed news as well as a reporter outside of the Taj Mahal hotel. Throughout the coverage, I couldn’t help to watch the news ticker at the bottom of the screen. Every few minutes, the ticker would show an item that Spencer and Heidi really didn’t get married. So when did this count as news? There was a major ongoing event with hostages in multiple locations and scores of people killed. That should have been the only item on the ticker. Instead, we need to know that two people on an MTV pseudo-reality show may or may not have got married?

Disgrasian has actual screenshots of the Spencer/Heidi CNN ticker.

It is awful. Also, there is practically nothing on the news about the mess in Thailand. But hey--Britney has a new album!

Who the hell are Spencer and Heidi?

I worry that more people were personally touched by the news about "Speidi" that about Mumbai

Lemmonex - OMG! Britney has a new album. There actually was a 30-second story about Thailand on ABC's World News Tonight tonight. Yes, I'm the only person under 55 who watches the evening news.

Hand of Godard - Exactly.

Charlotte - Is Spencer and Heidi really Speidi or did you create that? If you came up with that, gold star for you!

well... what is "news" and why would the saga of spencer and heidi not count as news?

I don't ask to be flip or contrary or anything, but from time to time, I see this type of commentary and can only shrug my shoulders...

spencer & heidi are MTV personalities? I've never heard of 'em, but I guess they seem to be at least moderately well-known public figures... are they intrinsically un-newsworthy? is this particular news about them too trivial? would it be newsworthy if they died?

and ultimately, what if they are what people want to know about? I mean, what if more people care about spencer and heidi than some incidents half a world away? I know it sounds kinda like people have their priorities backwards, but isn't it comforting in some way that people can afford to concern themselves with celebrity gossip?

oh, and fwiw, britney was the #1 yahoo search term for 2008... the WWE also managed to beat that obama fellow...
