Help Answer a Question

I had a discussion with someone recently who said that at a previous job, the company had alcohol in the office and that people would drink at work on Friday afternoons, even before the end of the day. She said that this was especially true at law firms and offices on or near the Hill. I have only worked in education and at non-profits and have never seen alcohol at work. There have been happy hours at a bar or restaurant after work, but never any alcohol or drinking in the office. So I'm wondering if drinking in the office is common or if this person is just making things up or worked at a wacky place. Anonymous comments are certainly fine on this one.

We have a six pack or so in the fridge at the office, but it's only there for the boss when he's there after hours. He's there at all hours of the day/night. It's never been "acceptable" to drink in our office during working hours. We've had a drink on the half day before Christmas, but that's it.

My old office used to have all free sodas, water, etc, and also had a lot of beer in the fridge. People would usually just drink it on Friday afternoons. I have to say it did look weird to see someone typing away at their office desk with a beer right next to them.

One of my Principals got reprimanded once after putting bottles of wine in each of the teacher's mailboxes for Christmas gifts...guess the fact that the mailboxes were in plain view to all who entered the office was not okay with the Superintendent!

And I've never seen anyone drink at school, but man, it seems like a good idea at times!

We have "wing-dings" once a month on Fridays with beer and wine, but they start at 5:45. The law firm of Arnold & Porter is famous for having full-bar happy hours every day during the summer, and every Friday in the off-season.

Thank you very much for the feedback. Christine, I'm really surprised that a principal would be reprimanded for giving wine as Christmas gift. It sounds like you could get reprimanded for NOT drinking at Arnold & Porter. Anyway, I still think the place where my friend worked was a little unusual.
